Should the Three NYC Library Systems Be Merged?

Last week the Mayor and City Council reached an agreement to restore library funding so that NYC libraries can continue to provide 6-day library service. In the midst of the budget crisis and petition signing, WNYC did a piece titled "One Library System Instead of Three: A Radical Cost-Cutting Solution?". I've heard the merger idea suggested before. What do you think? Should the three NYC library systems be merged?

  1. I like the idea of a shared catalog. A merged system, I'm not so sure. I think the independent systems each have strengths that might not carry over to a merged system. And, I don't think a behemoth would offer that much cost-cutting.

  2. Definetly with you on the idea of a shared catalog. Can't tell you how many times I have to search the other catalogs, so I end up using worldcat. Good point - there might not be much cost-cutting with a merged system. Also, I would imagine there might be possibly less flexibility to try out new projects and initiatives, given the size of the merged system. I like the idea of one library account/card for all three systems.
