Is the MLS/MLIS Necessary?

Having just received my MLIS two weeks ago, I still wonder if the degree is necessary. While I did learn some very interesting and useful things in library school, I'm not sure how much I really use or refer to that knowledge in my everyday work. A recent Library Journal article talked about the decreasing number of MLS degreed librarians in public libraries. The article discussed many aspects, including the changing of core functions, decline of reference, centralized collection development, and the changes in desk staffing. What does this mean for the future of the profession and libraries?

  1. I feel that I learned far more on the job and from my mentors than I did in library school, though I think a big reason was that the program I attended was pretty weak. I think the question is not "is the MLS relevant" but "how can library schools make their programs more relevant to the realities of our day-to-day work, and current challenges nd technology.

  2. Interesting question, Lisa. One I've thought about a lot. I agree with Andrea. Programs for library studies should be adapted for an evolving profession. I think of us as information management professionals (for lack of a better characterization) and perhaps it is up to us, the new generation of graduates, to lead the discussion so that the degree remains relevant. Have you thought of courses that you might have avoided, or courses that were lacking in necessary content? And, as a 21st century librarian in a public library, what information do you think should be taught?

  3. I've asked myself this question quite a lot! hehe. It seems to depend on the situation - both individual and institution. Someone could easily go through an MLS program and learn absolutely nothing - neither technical aspects of the profession nor philosophical. Why the hell would anyone want to hire that person? An MLS doesn't automatically make a librarian. It definitely beefs up a strong candidates resume/arsenal of skills.

  4. ooh also wanted to say - i think we'd see some interesting patterns if the survey posted on LJ was divided into regions or sorted by urban/suburban/rural libraries.

  5. Andrea, Iris, and Emily: Good points. A MLS doesn't automatically make a librarian but as it stands now, it serves as a starting point (though not always required) for the library/information profession just like a MSW is a starting point for the social work profession. The MLS being the starting point and the main degree for the profession, it's important that the programs are as relevant as possible, like you said. Perhaps it is up to the new generation of students/graduates to lead and continue the discussion on making LIS programs relevant and maybe somehow get involved with ALA Accreditation.

I enjoyed most of my courses, but I think that there should be courses on grant writing, project management, library statistics, outreach, and outcome-based evaluation. Most (if not all) courses should have a practical component. What kind of courses do you think should be offered in LIS programs?

I actually do have a couple of questions for you if it's allright. Could it be simply me or do some of these responses appear like they are written by brain dead individuals? :-P And, if you are writing on other online social sites, I'd like to follow anything new you have to post.
